Given this dearth of resources, grant seekers must recognize that funding is in short supply and highly competitive. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth applying, however.
Some things to keep in mind:
- News organizations will benefit from the abundance of research, writing and editing skills when applying for grants. The best proposals will be well-written, scrupulously proofread and edited, and supported by research that demonstrates the need, and the opportunity.
- Even the best proposals face an uphill battle, especially if they are shy of the grantmaker’s program interests, or if the applying organization has less infrastructure, or less of a record of accomplishment than its competitors. Don’t take rejection personally.
